Toukir Islam: My Journey From Retail Operations to Armed Security
My name is Toukir Islam. Today I am a Florida licensed security professional — Class G (Armed Security Officer) and Class D (Unarmed Security Officer) — based in West Palm Beach, and this December I start as a Loss Prevention Officer at The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Palm Beach Gardens. But my path here did not start in a uniform. It started behind the counter of my own stores.
1. The stores taught me everything first
For years I ran retail businesses in Florida — a gas station in Titusville and a drive-thru in Fort Myers. As an owner, every dollar lost to theft, every broken lock, every confrontation at the register came out of my pocket. That is a fast education. I learned access control by deciding who got keys to my office and safe. I learned de-escalation from angry customers at full speed. I learned loss prevention by reconciling my own registers. I did not know it then, but I was training for this career.
2. Getting licensed: Class D, then Class G
When I decided to go professional, I did it the right way — licensed by the state of Florida. The Class D license put me to work as an unarmed officer. Then I earned the Class G, the armed license: state-mandated firearms training, range qualification, and a much higher standard of judgment. An armed officer is trusted with serious responsibility — the license is the floor, not the ceiling.
3. Training beyond the license
Licenses get you hired; training makes you good. I earned CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification, CPR and First Aid, and FEMA emergency management courses (IS-100.c, IS-200.c, IS-700.b). I also volunteered in Access Control and Asset Protection for FIFA World Cup 26 in Miami — working a major event teaches crowd flow and access discipline at a scale no classroom can match.
4. The throughline: protecting people and property
Looking back, every step was the same job in different clothes. As a store owner I protected my business. As an unarmed officer I protected client property. As an armed officer I protect lives. This December, as a Loss Prevention Officer at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, I bring all of it — the owner who counted every dollar, the officer who writes the clean report, the professional who de-escalates before reaching for anything else.
If you are starting where I started — retail, restaurants, any frontline work — know this: you already have the instincts. Get licensed, get trained, and take it seriously. The uniform changes. The mission does not.
