Toukir Islam: Foot Patrol Tactics That Actually Deter Crime
Anybody can walk a route. Deterring crime on foot patrol takes intention. After years on post, here is what actually works.
First, be unpredictable. Criminals watch for patterns. If you check the back lot at 20 past every hour, they will time you. Vary your route, vary your timing, double back when they least expect it. Randomness is free and it is one of the strongest deterrents you have.
Second, be visible. Patrol is a performance as much as a task. Walk with purpose, make eye contact, let people see the uniform. Most opportunistic crime — car break-ins, vandalism, trespassing — happens where the criminal believes nobody is watching. Your presence is the product.
Third, check the things nobody checks. Doors that should be locked. Windows that should be latched. Fire exits that should be alarmed, not propped open. I find more real security problems in door handles than anywhere else. A patrol that just walks past locked doors without testing them is exercise, not security.
Fourth, use your senses. Listen for glass, alarms, running water where there should not be any. Smell for smoke, gas, burning electrical. Look for what changed since your last round — a new vehicle, a moved pallet, a light that went out. Baseline awareness is a skill you build round after round.
Fifth, document everything. The patrol log is your proof of work and your legal protection. Time, location, observation, action taken. "All secure" tells nobody anything. "Checked rear dock doors 0215, found dock 3 unsecured, re-secured and notified supervisor" tells the whole story.
And put the phone away. I have watched guards patrol while staring at a screen, and I promise you they saw nothing. The job is observation. Do the job.
Use the tools your company gives you. Many posts now use guard tour verification — checkpoints you scan with a phone or wand to prove you were there. Do not treat it as a chore to game; treat it as your alibi. When an incident happens at 0200 and the question is where you were, those scan records answer it. And if your post does not have them, your written log serves the same purpose. Either way, leave proof you did the work.
