No Experience? How to Start in Security in Florida
If you have never worked a security post, do you need experience before anyone will hire you? In Florida, the short answer is no. You need the right license, the right training, and a professional approach from day one.
I did not start with a long guard career behind me. I came from retail operations, where I was responsible for people, schedules, and keeping a site running. That taught me how to talk to people, stay calm under pressure, and take responsibility for a shift — the same skills that matter on a security post.
What Florida actually requires
For unarmed security work in Florida, the entry point is the Class D Security Officer license. Under Florida Statutes Chapter 493, an applicant must complete a minimum of 40 hours of professional training at a school or training facility licensed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). That training covers the foundations of the job, including legal duties, patrol and observation, emergency procedures, and report writing.
The training itself is designed to prepare someone new to the field. Read the exact requirement on the FDACS Class D license page and in Florida Statutes section 493.6303.
What "no experience" really means
No direct security experience does not mean no useful experience. Retail, hospitality, customer service, warehouse, and military roles all teach parts of this job: dealing with the public, following procedures, and handling difficult moments calmly.
Name those skills plainly instead of apologizing for what you have not done yet. A hiring manager does not only want a license number. They want to know you will show up on time, follow post orders, write a clear report, and treat people with respect.
How I would start today
First, complete the 40-hour Class D course through a licensed school and apply through FDACS. Second, build a simple resume that lists your customer-facing, responsibility-heavy roles, not just job titles. Third, apply for unarmed posts that match your availability. Reliability is a real qualification in this field.
If armed work interests you later, the Class G Statewide Firearm License is a separate step with its own firearms training. You do not need to decide that on day one. Get licensed, get steady, and learn the job first — see my post on the first 90 days as a security officer.
The takeaway
You do not need experience to start in Florida security. You need a Class D license through 40 hours of licensed training, plus reliability, clear communication, and calm professionalism. The license opens the door; how you work after that builds the career.
