Toukir Islam: Why a TWIC Card Is a Career Advantage in Security

Toukir Islam, security professional in West Palm Beach, Florida

I just received my TWIC card — the Transportation Worker Identification Credential — and I want to talk about why it matters so much in the security field. A lot of officers never get one. That is a missed opportunity.

First, what it is: TWIC is issued by the TSA after a federal background check and fingerprinting. It proves you are cleared to enter secure areas of ports, vessels, and maritime facilities. In Florida, that means the Port of Palm Beach, Port Everglades, cruise terminals — places where security work actually pays well.

Second, it is a trust signal. When a company sees TWIC on your resume, they know the federal government already vetted you. That puts you ahead of every applicant who only has a state license. I hold Florida Class G and Class D licenses, and TWIC stacks on top of them.

Third, it unlocks jobs others cannot take. Port security, cargo screening, cruise terminal posts, and maritime facility work often require TWIC. Those roles tend to pay more and offer steadier schedules than generic guard posts. My card is active through October 2031 — five years of eligibility.

If you are serious about security as a career, get your TWIC. The application takes some patience, but the credential pays for itself in the doors it opens.
