Toukir Islam: Interviewing a Shoplifter — Calm, Firm, Professional

Toukir Islam, security professional in West Palm Beach, Florida

The moment you approach a suspected shoplifter, everything you do matters — legally and professionally. Get it right and you recover the merchandise without drama. Get it wrong and you create a liability. Here is how I handle it.

First, be sure. Never approach on a hunch. You need to have seen the concealment — the merchandise going into a bag, under a jacket, into a stroller. "I think they took something" is not enough. In loss prevention, a bad stop is worse than a missed one, because a false accusation can become a lawsuit and it destroys your credibility.

Second, choose your moment and your place. Make the approach after they have passed the last point of sale, in a low-traffic area, ideally with a second associate or officer present. Never block someone's only exit and never chase. A shoplifter who feels trapped panics, and panicked people do unpredictable things.

Third, identify yourself and state the facts. "I am with store security. I saw you conceal [item] in [location]. I need you to come back inside with me so we can sort this out." Calm voice, professional language, no insults, no threats. You are giving them a controlled way to comply.

Fourth, in the office, keep it businesslike. Recover the merchandise, document what was taken and its value, get identification if they cooperate. Know your store's policy on prosecution and on banning — and follow it exactly. Consistency protects you.

Fifth, know when to call law enforcement. Large amounts, repeat offenders, aggression, or minors with no guardian present — do not handle those alone. Call the police and let them take it from there.

The through-line in all of this is dignity. Even someone who just stole is a person, and how you treat them reflects on you and the company. Calm, firm, professional — every time.

Juveniles require extra care. If the shoplifter is a minor, store policy and state law both matter — get a parent or guardian involved promptly and keep the interaction short and non-threatening. Never detain a minor the way you would an adult without understanding the legal differences. When in doubt, recover the merchandise, document, and let management and law enforcement guide the next steps.
