Hotel Room Safety Checklist for Travelers

A hotel room door with a deadbolt and security latch, a small in-room safe, and a suitcase beside the bed

Most hotel stays pass without a problem. That is no reason to skip a two-minute check when you walk into your room. As a licensed security officer in Florida, I treat a hotel room the same way I treat any post: check the locks, know the exits, and protect what matters before you settle in.

This checklist takes about five minutes on arrival, and seconds each time you leave or return.

1. Check the room the moment you arrive

2. Lock up every time you are inside

3. Protect valuables and documents

4. Know the exits and settle in for the night

The takeaway

Lock the door, use the safe, and know your exit. Those three habits cover most hotel room risk, and they cost you almost no time. For the same routine at home, see my Home Security Checklist: 12 Habits That Stop Most Burglars.
