Character.AI Is Bankrupt — and Disney Is Buying the Pieces for Just $20 Million

Five years after launch, Character.AI is bankrupt. The chatbot startup — once one of the breakout hits of the AI boom, with 20 million monthly users at its peak — filed for Chapter 11 protection on October 12, listing liabilities of $50 million to $100 million. Disney has stepped in as the lead bidder for some of its assets, at just $20 million.

The collapse was driven by lawsuits, not technology. The company was sued after the suicide of a 14-year-old Florida boy linked to one of its chatbots, investigated by Texas over child safety, and hit with a Disney cease-and-desist over its characters — the same Disney now buying its technology. Google paid $2.7 billion to license Character.AI’s tech in 2024. If no higher bid appears, the platform will be shut down.
